Welcome to the CISS Asia Security Initiative Website

In May 2009, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation launched the Asia Security Initiative (ASI) – a world-wide network of 27 research institutions which, over the next seven years and with the MacArthur Foundation’s support, will develop new ideas for overcoming security challenges across Asia. Announcing an investment of $68million over seven years, James Fanton, the Chairman of MacArthur Foundation, said the world was being changed by the increasing economic and political power of Asia. At the same time, security challenges – ranging from great power conflict to resource scarcity – have the potential to undercut the region’s dynamism. It was key that Asia-Pacific countries work together to manage these issues in the interests of peace and prosperity.

The Centre for International and Strategic Studies (CISS) at Peking University was selected as one of three core ASI institutions. CISS will lead research on ‘Asian Security Cooperation’, looking particularly at how China’s rise is altering regional security dynamics and architecture, and offering practical guidance on how to encourage greater security cooperation across Asia. As a core institution, CISS manages a research cluster composed of a number of ASI partner institutions working in the same area. CISS is responsible for facilitating the sharing of information and research, and the organization of regular conferences and seminars amongst these partner institutions.

Please explore the website and feel free to contact CISS for more information.
